Running a small business while raising little ones is an incredible adventure—one filled with joyful moments, surprising challenges, and the constant need for flexibility. As a mom of two and the owner of Lily Taylor Designs, I’ve learned that balancing business and parenthood is a juggling act. Through ups and downs, I've found strategies that help me stay organized, make time for family, and keep my business thriving. Here’s a peek into my journey and some tips for other parents navigating this path.

1. Embrace Flexibility

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to stay flexible. Little ones are unpredictable, and running a small business means that no two days are the same! When I plan my day, I keep in mind that schedules might shift, whether it's due to a surprise playdate or a rush of customer orders.

  • My Tip: Set realistic goals each day. I start with my “must-dos,” but I’m always ready to pivot if my kids need a little extra attention or if a business matter pops up. Prioritizing tasks helps me feel accomplished, even if I don’t cross everything off my list.

2. Designate “Work” and “Family” Spaces

Creating boundaries between work and family life is essential. I love that my work allows me to be home with my kids, but I’ve found it helpful to designate specific areas for each role. Having a dedicated workspace—even if it’s just a corner of a room—helps me stay focused when it’s time to work and fully present when I’m with my children.

  • My Tip: If possible, set up a workspace that’s separate from your family areas. A small desk or table can be a great spot for your laptop, planner, and anything you need to stay organized. I also set aside areas where my kids can do crafts or play nearby, so I can keep an eye on them while getting work done.

3. Involve the Kids in Your Business

One of the joys of being a small business owner is that my kids get to see what I do firsthand. I love involving them in age-appropriate ways, like letting them help organize materials or even pick out colors for new designs. It’s a fun way for them to feel included, and it gives them an early introduction to creativity and entrepreneurship.

  • My Tip: Invite your little ones to “help” with tasks that don’t require too much focus, like packaging or sorting materials. It may take a little longer, but it’s a wonderful way to spend time together and let them see what you’re working on.

4. Be Kind to Yourself

Balancing business and family life can be demanding, and there will be days that feel overwhelming. I remind myself that it’s okay not to be perfect and that progress is more important than perfection. Some days, I might get a lot done; other days, being present with my kids is the biggest accomplishment.

  • My Tip: Practice self-compassion and take breaks when you need them. It’s okay to take a day off or ask for help. You’re doing a lot, and your well-being is essential to your business and your family.

5. Set Boundaries with Work Hours

One thing I’ve found helpful is setting “business hours,” even if they’re non-traditional. During these hours, I focus solely on work, whether it’s during naptime, early in the morning, or late at night. This approach allows me to enjoy family time without feeling like I’m always “on.”

  • My Tip: Find a schedule that works for you and your family. If you’re a night owl, reserve time in the evenings for business tasks. If you’re an early bird, use that quiet morning time. Setting boundaries around work hours helps me stay present in whatever I’m doing.

6. Create a Support System

Whether it’s family, friends, or fellow business owners, having a support system is a lifesaver. I rely on friends and family who can help with childcare when I’m managing a busy day, and I connect with other small business moms who understand the balance.

  • My Tip: Don’t be afraid to ask for help or reach out to a supportive community. Sharing the journey with other parents helps, and sometimes, it’s just reassuring to hear you’re not alone. Consider connecting with a local mompreneur group or joining an online community of parents who run small businesses.

7. Celebrate Small Wins

When you’re balancing business and family, even small accomplishments feel like big wins! I make a habit of celebrating the little things, whether it’s finishing a big order or spending quality time with my kids. Every win, no matter how small, reminds me of why I started this journey.

  • My Tip: Keep a journal or a note on your phone to jot down daily wins. Reflecting on what went well can help you stay positive and motivated, especially on challenging days. Remember, you’re doing something amazing by balancing business and parenthood!

Finding Joy in the Journey

Running a small business as a mom is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. It’s not always easy, but it’s a journey filled with love, growth, and so many memorable moments with my little ones. If you’re a parent balancing business and family, know that you’re not alone and that every step you take makes a difference.
